GLP-1 Medications and Gallbladder Health: What You Should Know

,

GLP-1 receptor agonists have become increasingly popular for both diabetes management and weight loss. These medications can be highly effective, but as their use grows, physicians are seeing more patients experience gallbladder-related symptoms that may be linked to these therapies.

While most side effects from GLP-1 medications are gastrointestinal, rapid weight loss and changes in bile composition can sometimes lead to gallbladder issues such as pain, nausea after fatty meals, or gallstone formation.

“We’re seeing a growing number of patients presenting with gallbladder-related symptoms that may be linked to these therapies,” said Sruti Patel, M.D., general surgeon at Pascack Valley Medical Center.

Common signs of gallbladder dysfunction can include:

  • Pain in the right upper abdomen, especially after eating
  • Nausea or vomiting following fatty meals
  • Bloating or discomfort that comes and goes

Patients with a history of gallbladder disease, those who experience rapid weight loss, or those taking other medications that affect bile metabolism may be at higher risk.

At Pascack Valley Medical Center, our surgical team offers prompt evaluations, diagnostic imaging such as ultrasounds, and minimally invasive options like laparoscopic cholecystectomy when needed.

If you are taking a GLP-1 medication and notice persistent abdominal pain, nausea, or changes in digestion, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider.
