Vasectomy

A vasectomy is one of the most reliable forms of birth control, with nearly 100% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy. Vasectomies are performed in our clinic under light sedation. During this procedure, the vas deferens — the tube that carries sperm from the testes to the urethra — is cut and a small segment is removed. The ends are then closed to prevent sperm from entering the semen. Next, the surgeon makes a small incision in each side of the scrotum, pulls the tubes through the incisions, cuts them, and ties the ends. This quick and minimally invasive procedure ensures that sperm can no longer contribute to a pregnancy.

Post-procedure, it is normal to experience some discomfort and swelling. Patients will receive detailed instructions on caring for the incision site, which may include using cold packs and taking over-the-counter pain medications. Activity should be limited for a few days, but most men can return to their usual activities, including sexual intercourse, within a week. Although vasectomies are intended to be permanent, they can sometimes be reversed, with success depending on factors such as the time elapsed since the procedure. It is important to note that sterility is not immediate; it typically takes about three months (or 20 ejaculations) to clear out existing sperm. Until a urologist confirms that your sperm count is zero, alternative birth control methods should be used to prevent pregnancy.
