Digestive discomfort that doesn’t go away can be more than just an occasional stomach issue. Two conditions often associated with ongoing gastrointestinal symptoms are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, both forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). While they share similarities, understanding their differences is key to proper diagnosis and treatment.
According to Scott Lippe, M.D., gastroenterologist with Pascack Valley Medical Group, the primary distinction lies in where and how these conditions affect the digestive system.
“Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the rectum, and often appears in patches that can extend through multiple layers of the intestine,” said Dr. Lippe. “Ulcerative colitis, however, is limited to the colon and rectum and spreads continuously along the inner lining of the intestine.”
Although they impact different areas of the gastrointestinal tract, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis often present with similar symptoms. These may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, unintended weight loss, and fatigue, symptoms that can significantly affect daily life if left untreated.
While there is currently no cure for either condition, advances in medical treatment allow many patients to effectively manage symptoms and maintain a good quality of life. Early diagnosis plays a critical role in preventing complications and identifying the most appropriate treatment plan.
“Patients shouldn’t ignore ongoing digestive symptoms,” Dr. Lippe emphasized. “With the right diagnosis and treatment, we can help patients feel better and get back to living their lives.”
