Put Yourself First: Key Steps for Women's Health and Wellness

According to the United States Census Bureau, women account for 50.4% of the U.S. population (U.S. Census, 2024). Approximately 13% of women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer during their lifetime (American Cancer Society, 2024). Currently, 44% of women in the United States live with some form of heart disease. While, about 0.65% of women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cervical cancer at some point in their lives (American Cancer Society, 2024).

In many households, women are the primary decision-makers for healthcare, yet they often prioritize the well-being of others over their own.  Given these statistics, we strongly urge women to prioritize their health by scheduling annual physical and wellness visits. These routine exams are essential cornerstones of preventive healthcare and have been proven to save lives.

“Having an annual physical keeps you informed about your health, allows you to detect concerns early, and helps you stay on track in your health journey,” said Dr. Sylva Takvorian, a primary care physician. Osteoporosis screenings are incorporated into annual physicals starting at age 65 for women. During physical and wellness visits, patients receive screenings for conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.

It is important to prioritize these visits, as they provide an opportunity to address specific women’s health concerns. These include cervical cancer screenings, managing menopause and perimenopause symptoms, and exploring various birth control options that align with one’s preferences and lifestyle. HPV vaccines, which prevent cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases, are also performed, and administered during these visits.

Women’s wellness visits offer a range of services tailored to their unique needs at key age milestones. Pap smears and mammograms are essential components of well visits for patients due for these screenings.

To care for others, you must first care for yourself. Ensure your health and wellness by scheduling annual check-ups and wellness visits. Encourage the women in your life to do the same.
