About endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic, often debilitating condition affecting an estimated 1 in 10 women of reproductive age in the United States—approximately 9 million women nationwide. Despite its prevalence, the condition remains widely misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and stigmatized.

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue like that of the uterus’s inner lining grows outside of the uterus. It is often painful, and can affect the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and tissue lining the pelvis.

Endometriosis symptoms include:

  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Infertility
  • Nausea
  • Pain during intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Pain with bowel movements and urination
  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
  • Pelvic pain

Women often endure symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, and infertility for years before receiving a proper diagnosis—on average, a delay of 5 to 12 years. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, speak with your primary care provider or obstetric-gynecology (OB-GYN) specialist about obtaining a referral for endometriosis treatment.

Our endometriosis treatment options

At Pascack Valley Medical Center, our endometriosis specialists provide various treatments to ease the pain of endometriosis. First, our specialists will diagnose your endometriosis with a pelvic exam or ultrasound/MRI. However, these methods can produce nebulous results, so our specialists may recommend laparoscopic surgery to confirm an endometriosis diagnosis.

Once an endometriosis diagnosis has been confirmed, our specialists will work with you to determine a treatment plan that works. Our treatments include:

  • Birth control
  • General over-the-counter medications for pain relief
  • Laparoscopic surgery to remove endometriosis tissue
  • Medications that lower estrogen, which fuels endometriosis
  • Other hormone blockers
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to lessen pain

Certain lifestyle changes are also recommended for patients with endometriosis. This includes eating an anti-inflammatory diet, regular exercise. and stress management.
