Colon Cancer Screenings
According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. However, colon cancer can be treated or even prevented if caught early.
Adults without a family history of colon cancer should begin regular colon cancer screenings at age 45. The national recommendation for colon cancer screenings is once every 10 years. However, more frequent screenings may be necessary if abnormalities are present or if you are at a higher risk of developing colon cancer.
While there are many types of colorectal cancer screenings, colonoscopies are the most effective method for your doctor to view your colon and look for any areas of concern. During the procedure, your physician will use a small catheter (thin, flexible tube) with a small camera attachment to examine your colon. This allows your doctor to detect any polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum, and remove them before they turn cancerous.

Colon cancer will affect 1 in every 18 Americans and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Early detection and prevention through routine screening, such as a colonoscopy, are essential.

If you are healthy and meet the criteria, you can fast-track your colonoscopy. Simply complete the pre-screening questionnaire, and if eligible, you will be scheduled for a convenient video visit with one of our providers, followed by your scheduling procedure.
Symptoms of Colon Cancer
Colon cancer can produce a wide range of symptoms, but some of the most common ones include:
- Bleeding from the rectum
- Blood in the stood
- Frequent vomiting
- New and lasting constipation or diarrhea
- Persistent abdominal pain and/or bloating
- Unexplained weight loss
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see a doctor as soon as possible. It is also important to note that some patients with colon cancer show no symptoms at all. For this reason, regular colonoscopies are a vital part of your continued health.
Preparing for a Colonoscopy
A few weeks before your procedure, you will receive instructions on how to prepare for your colonoscopy. You may be required to adjust your diet, and you will need to consume a prescription laxative drink that will help you empty your bowel entirely before the procedure.
When you arrive for your procedure, your doctor will administer a sedative to you intravenously (through an IV). The procedure generally takes 30 to 60 minutes, and you will need someone to drive you home after the procedure. The vast majority of patients recover in less than 24 hours, and the vast majority are able to return to work the next day. Patients should avoid driving after their procedure.
